Clarko refuses to look back

HAWTHORN coach Alastair Clarkson is leaving his players to stoke the ashes of last year's grand final loss to Sydney as the Hawks prepare for the rematch at the MCG on Saturday night.

"You let the players be the ones that try to drive themselves for this particular game," said Clarkson after the Hawks improved their win-loss count to 5-1 after winning a tough battle against Adelaide at AAMI Stadium by 11 points.

"I'm not going to focus too much on last year."

Hawthorn achieved a rare win at West Lakes - where they have beaten the Crows just once in Clarkson's era and lost 10 of the previous 11 meetings at AAMI Stadium - without relying on key forward Lance "Buddy" Franklin.

He finished without a goal for the second consecutive game.

The only other time Franklin had failed to score goals in successive games was in his rookie season of 2005.

And there is a question on whether Franklin will play in the grand final rematch.

He was put on notice to the AFL match review panel for his headlock on Adelaide defender Andy Otten after a marking contest in the last term.

But Clarkson was more concerned with the supply to Franklin and his fellow forwards, particularly in the second term when the Hawks dominated possession but gave up a 28-point advantage by being goal-less for 27 minutes.

"We're pleased in a sense that we have been able to win a couple of close games without him contributing," said Clarkson who last week watched his team dodge North Melbourne while Franklin did not fire.

"Obviously it's going to help if he started getting on the scoreboard a bit more, but it's good that can find different avenues."

Gunston kicked three, so that was pleasing for us.

But we'd obviously like (Franklin) to be playing a little bit better, but he's been such a formidable contributor for us in our front half for such a long period of time and for him to have up and down days isn't such a bad thing for either he or us.

"We didn't connect with our forwards as well as what we'd have liked," added Clarkson.

"There were times when they were open and we didn't take those chances; same with Adelaide. The defences were on top, there were few marks inside 50m. It made for a really tough tussle.

"That was a real grind. We're really pleased to come to Adelaide and get the win and move on to next week.

"They are tough to beat in Adelaide, particularly when the Crows have been under the pump and it was (Adelaide key defender) Ben Rutten's 200th.

"To win in those circumstances, no matter what the margin is, is an outstanding result for our club."

Hawthorn defender Brent Guerra came off in the last term with a suspected left-knee injury, but he resumed to ease concerns for the Hawks who already have taken major hits by injuries to key defenders.
