Too early to think finals: Schulz

Port Adelaide forward Jay Schulz is trying not to look any further ahead than the clash against West Coast on Sunday.

PORT Adelaide is taking the last-quarter sting from the Gold Coast as a reminder of how its mission for AFL credibility is fragile.

Power captain Travis Boak gathered his side on Metricon Stadium after the 38-point win against the Suns created a historic 4-0 start - and a warning from the Gold Coast's stronger finish.

"The whole group felt the same way - we had been stitched up in the last quarter," said Port key forward Jay Schulz, whose team lost the last term by 16 points.

"It was us getting together to recognise that as a group and recognising we still have work to do. It starts with us getting that stuff right at training this week.

"It's not an option for us to to feel settled or comfortable about anything we're doing."

The Power was considered a long-shot to play in its first final series since the 2007 grand final. Now it is a contender.

"It's week-by-week for us," said Schulz, dismissing the new optimism generated by the Power's unbeaten start.

"We're coming from so far back . . . we can't afford to go down that path (of planning for September)."

Port's refit in the summer - with a new coaching panel, new fitness program and new football department - has put the Power in its best position to chase a finals berth since '07. But Schulz argues the most meaningful change is in the players' attitude.

"There have been so many changes with our playing group and coaching staff but in the pre-season you could see the players were sick of the way we had been playing in the past three to four years," said Schulz.

Port's last quarter against Gold Coast, in which the Suns outscored the Power 3.4 to 1.0, may signal the high-energy game played under Ken Hinkley has sapped his young squad. Schulz is far more searching of the fadeout.

"Let's not take anything away from (the Suns)," he said.

"It has been a big month for us, but we can't just now accept that and start a down week. We are definitely disappointed about the way we played in the first and last quarters at the weekend - and we're the first to admit that."

Port reported no injury on the Gold Coast and is loaded with options by having players in form in the SANFL.
