THE Suns will build their defence around Rory Thompson after extending his contract until the end of 2015.

The Suns rate the Southport product as a No.1 defender and a future All Australian. Despite having played just 14 games, he now gets the best opposition forwards every week.

Underrated midfielder Matt Shaw and goal sneak Aaron Hall have also inked new deals that will keep them at the club until the end of 2015.

It leaves Dion Prestia and Daniel Gorringe as the only players from the side the Suns believe will contest their first grand final still to be re-signed.

Thompson has quickly become a favourite Sun.

He first emerged as a wrestling-type defender who was best suited to playing on the big gorillas, but a peerless training ethic has seen him develop endurance levels comparable to the club's midfielders and he can now play

on the hard-running forwards.

He took on the greatest player to ever come out of the Gold Coast and one of the hardest-running forwards in the history of the game, Nick Riewoldt, on Saturday night and did a superb job.

"It was definitely tough; I've never pulled up this sore from a game,'' Thompson said.

"I prefer the big stay-at-home forwards.

"But I'm starting to enjoy getting jobs on the likes of Sam Reid and Riewoldt, who like to get up the ground more.''

His skipper Gary Ablett has no doubts Thompson is a future All Australian.

Ablett said Thompson's name had recently come up in a discussion with his brother Nathan, the full-forward in the Cats' 2007 premiership win over Port Adelaide, who described an intra-club scratch match against Thompson as the hardest battle with a fullback he'd ever had.

"He said Rory was the toughest guy he had ever played on one-on-one,'' Ablett said. ``And Nathan has played on some great fullbacks.''

Thompson's next fortnight is the stuff that would give most kids with 14 games under their belt nightmares.

He will stand Sydney premiership forward Sam Reid on Saturday and also be called upon to swing on to monster ruckman Shane Mumford when he rests in attack, and the following week he is likely to get Brisbane superstar Jonathan Brown.
