Rule too cruel for likes of Petrenko

JARED Petrenko's AFL career would be jeopardised by the radical capping of interchanges, Adelaide coach Brenton Sanderson has warned.

As the AFL continues to experiment with its 20-rotation-a-quarter rule in the NAB Cup, Sanderson said the league has to be mindful of not ruining players' careers when it introduces capping to the premiership season in 2014.

"Guys like Jared Petrenko, who is just flat out for five minutes and then off, would probably find it harder to get a game," Sanderson said.

"And it would certainly affect the way we pick players at the draft and how we train.

"If they cut it by too much we would need more players between the heights of 188 and 192cm with a really good aerobic capacity."

Adelaide uses the interchange bench more than any other club, last season recording between 155 and 160 rotations in most games.

Petrenko was used with great effect in bursts off the bench as a forward line tackling machine but his role could be diminished when rotations are cut.

The AFL has set a limit of 80 rotations (20 per quarter) in this year's NAB Cup as it looks to cap interchanges next season.

League chief executive Andrew Demetriou said yesterday it had already been determined a cap would apply next season, with only the precise number up for debate.

Melbourne coach Mark Neeld has warned the league that capping interchanges would run players into the ground and take the game back five years while former Port Adelaide captain Dom Cassisi yesterday tweeted his dissatisfaction at the proposal.

"Cap rotations equals if you can't run you can't play. Tendonitis will be in vogue and the flood will be back with a vengeance," Cassisi tweeted.

Sanderson said he "could live with" rotations being capped at a limit of 120 or more. Anything less than that, he said, could spell trouble.

"If it's (down to) 130 or 120 it wouldn't impact on things a great deal," Sanderson said.

"But we rely on speed, I like a fast game with us, that's how we train our players.

"Eighty (rotations) certainly impacted us on the weekend (against Geelong)."

Sanderson said most of the AFL's rule changes were good but warned that it could ruin the sport by introducing rules that "change the evolution of the game".

"So it's important clubs get their say and they get listened to," he said.

"I think what will probably happen is the 18 clubs will unanimously vote against it (a cap on interchanges) and it will probably still come in.

"The cap's okay, we'll play by whatever rules the AFL brings in, that won't be the issue.

"I guess the number is what's important. So we'll have to make sure that after consultation with the AFL that we're all happy."

Sanderson said he hopes injuries aren't used as a reason for having fewer interchanges.

"Because we rotated more than anyone last year and we had the lowest amount of injuries, so injuries aren't a factor for rotations," he said.

"Hopefully when they make a decision they are really clear on why they are making this adjustment to the rules."
