FOUR months after Port Adelaide won a war for his services, acclaimed Darren Burgess has been hailed for turning around the club's fitness program.
The Power will head into its opening NAB Cup clashes against Adelaide and St Kilda on Sunday in its best shape in years.
As questions abound about the four-year fitness program run by previous head fitness coach Cam Falloon, his replacement has made an instant impact.
While fringe player Nick Salter has succumbed to foot stress fractures, the only key players unlikely to start the season are goalsneak Robbie Gray - who is on the comeback trail from a knee reconstruction - and key forward John Butcher (hip injury).
Both are recovering from surgery performed last year.
Unlike previous pre-seasons, not one Power player has broken down with a serious muscle tear, despite those close to the club telling The Advertiser Burgess has worked the team much harder than last year.
"He's been able to keep guys on the track, which has made a difference," defender Jasper Pittard noted.
"As a whole, we're a lot fitter. We've had guys being able to stay out there session after session, which has been a real positive.
"We've been given the attitude of not wasting a session."
