PORT Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley has highlighted the frustration of AFL coaches who cannot help drug-hit players while cases are shrouded in secrecy.
Hinkley was taken aback by AFL chief Andrew Demetriou's admission AFL coaches are being told by club doctors they cannot pick a player - but not the reasons for the player's withdrawal from the selection pool.
Demetriou told The Australian: "Club doctors would tell the coach or the football manager that a certain player was not in a condition to play. He does not need to specify any injury or illness, just that he considers the player not well enough to play."
Hinkley yesterday declared his discomfort with this facet of the AFL illicit drug policy that holds back information to clubs until a player is on his third strike.
"I never thought that happened," said Hinkley, in his first-year as senior coach at Alberton.
"Clearly I'd like to know why there is a problem and what I can do to help that problem."
Hinkley next week will be able to take his concerns direct to Demetriou when Port president David Koch, chief executive Keith Thomas and football chief Peter Rohde are called to AFL House to be briefed on the Australian Crime Commission report on drugs and organised crime in Australian sport.
As Port is one of the last clubs to be called to the AFL, the impression is there is no major concern with the Power's sports science program.
This is amid a rebuild with the return of fitness coach Darren Burgess to Alberton after his recent stint at English Premier League club Liverpool.
But the principle of the club doctor having the final say remains at Port.
"We're really detailed in what we do and we trust that our doctors are on top of everything here," said Hinkley. "And everything our sports science people do, we review that hard."
