FORMER Essendon and Geelong fitness boss Loris Bertolacci believes performance-enhancing drugs pose a bigger danger to non-elite sportspeople.
Bertolacci, who worked in AFL strength and conditioning between 1987 and 2006, said there was a "massive" subculture of performance-enhancing drugs and illegal supplements at local gyms which made dangerous substances readily available.
He said sportspeople in second-tier leagues, who were not exposed to elite drug education programs, were at biggest risk.
"It's definitely rife," Bertolacci said.
"Once you drop below AFL, that's where a subculture exists and I think it is massive, because there is money involved. People are selling the stuff.
"You've got a heap of guys playing VFL, for example, and those guys there are more susceptible to people in gyms, because they probably go to the gyms after work and go and talk to that guy who knows someone who knows someone.
"It's definitely a worry because of the influence of these people (who provide performance-enhancing substances) on young people. It's just like selling ice (methamphetamine) to them.
"But guys in the AFL (strength and conditioning departments) like David Buttifant (Collingwood) and Andrew Russell (Hawthorn), they would be so strict."
Bertolacci took over Geelong's fitness department in 1999 and was replaced in 2007 by Dean Robinson, the Essendon high-performance manager who was this week stood down.
Bertolacci said he banned Cats players from taking supplements in the early years of their career, as it was more important to focus on proper nutrition and exercise technique.
He said it was only in the 1980s that a small number of players made inquires about performance-enhancing substances.
"Players were talking about it then, that was it. But people knew not to talk to me about it because, to me, it was a non-negotiable. Just no," he said.
"But in the 1980s, there was no testing."
