PORT Adelaide chief executive Keith Thomas says the club faces a tough call over whether to recruit Liam Jurrah, describing his case as "not normal".
The Power players have warmed to Jurrah since he started training with them last Wednesday and want him on board but Thomas said the decision to throw him an AFL lifeline would go well beyond his undoubted football talent.
Port Adelaide is considering rookie-listing Jurrah at Tuesday's drafts but wants to make a decision on him tomorrow.
"There are a lot of things to consider because this is not a normal case," Thomas said.
"I think you would be kidding yourself to think that this was just a young boy fulfilling his AFL dream.
"There is a lot more to it than that and so we will take due care with it."
Former Port great Warren Tredrea has warned his club off the troubled former Melbourne forward, saying he is not worth the risk.
But key defender Jackson Trengove said the players would like to play alongside Jurrah next season, noting he had impressed in his first week at the club.
"Liam's been terrific at training and it would be exciting to bring his talent to the club," Trengove said.
"He has that X-factor about him and I'd like to play with him."
However, Thomas said that with Jurrah to face court in Alice Springs in March, the club had much to consider.
Jurrah, 24, faces three charges of aggravated assault and one count of unlawfully causing serious harm over an altercation in March this year at a town camp on the edge of Alice Springs.
Asked how big the risk in recruiting him would be, Thomas said: "I'm not sure so much about being a risk. He just brings a different sort of package.
"There is the AFL football package and then there's Liam the person. As a club we just really need to consider all of those things.
"With the sort of environment we would be bringing him into, we just want to make sure that if he were to come here he would be coming for the right reasons and be in good shape.
"And we have to work out if we are ready and equipped to take him on. That's the process we are going through."
It is understood Port is becoming increasingly concerned that Jurrah's looming court case could result in a jail sentence.
And with a young list, it is worried how off-field issues could impact on the playing group.
While Jurrah's future remains unclear, Central District teenager Sam Colquhoun resumed training with Port yesterday after being guaranteed to be picked up by the club with its sole selection at the pre-season draft.
He trained with Essendon on Monday.
