BRAD Ebert says he is ready to captain Port Adelaide.
In what would be another chapter in the famous Ebert dynasty at Port, Brad said he would be "more than happy" to step into the role if veteran Dom Cassisi is pushed aside next year.
"If it was to come my way I would be more than happy to take on the role," Ebert said.
"But Dom's the captain at the moment and until that decision is made the rest will just play out from there.
"Whether the players have a (captaincy) vote or whether it just comes down to Ken (coach Ken Hinkley) is something we'll work through in the new year.
"At the moment everyone is just making sure they are putting their best foot forward on the track."
Hinkley put up the captain vacancy sign last month, declaring the leadership position wide open, despite Cassisi leading the club for the past four years. He said he wanted to see which players stood up to be counted during summer training and which ones didn't.
At 30, Cassisi, while highly respected, is unlikely to be reappointed to the gig as Port seeks a new beginning under a new coaching panel.
This leaves Ebert - who starred in his first year at the Power after crossing from West Coast - and fellow midfielder Travis Boak as the frontrunners to replace him.
The pair have virtually become the face of the club in recent times.
Defender Jackson Trengove - in last year's leadership group - also is in the mix.
However, he is considered a long-shot.
Trengove said the players were not yet thinking about who was going to be captain, saying "at this stage we're just trying to improve".
"The quality of our games last year was not good enough . . . we're just out there really training hard and trying to get better," he said.
"We're not thinking about who is going to be captain. At this stage it's Dom and Ken will make his decision when it gets closer to the games."
Trengove said Port had no shortage of captaincy candidates and that some of the club's younger players were also showing good leadership skills.
"There's definitely plenty of good young leaders," he said.
"There's even a bracket below me that's a little bit younger who are up and coming amd really good and obviously we've got a lot more experience now in that second tier with Brad and Boaky and Jay Schulz.
"We'll have a strong leadership group which will be formed by Ken when he decides the time is right."
