ADELAIDE'S commitment to delisted youngster Nick Joyce faces an interesting test next week when the Crows must decide which of their three draft picks to use on re-drafting the 19-year-old.
The Crows stressed their intent to reclaim the Woodville-West Torrens product, after he became the fall guy in the Kurt Tippett saga.
"It is our intention to re-draft Nick at the earliest opportunity post the AFL Commission's findings," said list manager David Noble, after being forced to delist Joyce because of a technicality which saw Tippett remain on Adelaide's list.
That opportunity is now pick 20 in next Thursday's draft, after the AFL yesterday decided to postpone its hearing into the club's salary cap scandal and confirm Adelaide's place in the draft.
The Crows must now decide whether to use their first pick on Joyce, or hope he falls through to them at pick 54 or 64.
Noble was unavailable for comment yesterday and recruiting manager Hamish Ogilvie did not want to comment on Joyce's situation.
But Ogilvie said he was thrilled to have all three picks in this draft, given the amount of scouting that has been done to prepare for it.
"I feel for them (the club's scouts) when they plough away at the footy all season watching 100 games or so and all their work was looking like it was for going to be for nothing, or not much," Ogilvie said.
"We don't want to lose any picks and I hope we don't but if we happen to (lose them next year) at least from my point of view it gives us a bit longer to plan."
Ogilvie, who when contacted yesterday was driving home from a player interview "in the bush", said his team was fully prepared for the draft. "Because we didn't know what was going to happen, we prepared like we normally would," he said.
"We continued to prepare as though we had pick 20 and then we prepared some more scenarios if we did lose them. So we've probably actually over-prepared."
Ogilvie expects to get a talented youngster with pick 20, but also uncover a gem with the Crows' late pick.
And he believes gems are available. "Picks under 30 are usually good picks," he said. "And we've turned up Rory Sloane, Sam Shaw and Jarryd Lyons with late picks so I was still confident, if we had the last two picks in the draft, we'd done the work to find a good player.
"Because we've done it before."
