Western Bulldogs coach Brendan McCartney concedes his side "haven't been hard enough to play against" for the majority of this season.

The Western Bulldogs have continued their poor start to 2013, this time falling to the West Coast Eagles by 70 points.

THE Western Bulldogs expect to welcome back experienced trio Ryan Griffen, Robert Murphy and Daniel Giansiracusa for Saturday's clash with North Melbourne.

The Bulldogs are 16th following yesterday's heavy defeat to West Coast at Patersons Stadium, but coach Brendan McCartney was buoyed by the probably inclusions ahead of the clash with the Kangaroos.

"Every game's winnable. We have to recover now and we've got to back up next Saturday against another emerging team,'' McCartney said.

"Our next month does provide some opportunities to be really competitive.''

McCartney lamented his team's inability to compete despite winning the inside 50 count 53-52 and the clearance tally 49-40.

"It was a disappointing day for our footy club,'' he said.

"For three out of the six games this year, we've had long patches in games where we haven't been hard enough to play against.

"It means when the game is stationary and stops, we're very good at it.

"You have to be able to do that, but there's a lot of space out there too and you have to be prepared to break momentum by getting your hands dirty.

"Sometimes that means just running hard to fill space and to cover, slow the opposition down.

"And we'll get there. But we need our leaders to show the right way and we need our young people to not lose confidence and know that it's the right way to play and the correct way to play.''

Tagger Nick Lower received a poke in the eye and youngster Jake Stringer was subbed out with a cork but both are expected to be available to face the Kangaroos.

West Coast coach John Worsfold was hopeful key midfielders Luke Shuey and Scott Selwood would be cleared of injury after both finished the match with tight calves.

Worsfold was pleased with the first outings of the season for All-Australian ruckman Nic Naitanui and Collingwood recruit Sharrod Wellingham.

He said Naitanui's cameo as a sub was an important part of his progression towards full fitness after recovering from osteitis pubis.

"It was good to be able to use him as a sub today, because we didn't want to play him any longer than that,'' Worsfold said.

"We're just following his program and it fit in well today.''

Worsfold was confident Wellingham would prove a valuable addition to the team's midfield.

"He was a bit scratchy with a couple of things he did, but a lot of the stuff he did was classy and he fit in really well with the boys,'' he said.
