LUKE Ball has needed only two VFL games to let Collingwood supporters know he's back, fit and firing.

Ball was a standout in the Magpies' six-point loss to Williamstown yesterday, showing his strength at the contest and ability to find the ball all over the ground while playing 80 per cent of the game.

The performance follows a 26-disposal effort in his comeback game against Bendigo Gold.

Collingwood VFL coach Dale Tapping lauded Ball's efforts at Burbank Oval.

"Luke always plays well. His effort around the contest was fantastic," Tapping said.

"He's heading in the right direction and today was another step (forward) for him in that regard."

Collingwood faces a tough decision as to how it handles Ball this weekend as the VFL side has a bye.

With the AFL side taking on Fremantle in Perth on Saturday night, Tapping said the decision was up to the match committee.

"Maybe another week on the track for him could bring him up again, (but) it's up to Bucks (coach Nathan Buckley) and the others to make that judgment," Tapping said.

Veteran forward Alan Didak put together yet another promising performance and could be on the verge of an AFL recall.

"(Didak's) tackling and his transition work today is as good as it's been all year," Tapping said.

"He's been really good for four to five weeks now so again, if (Collingwood) need him I suppose he's ready. He's put a really good block of footy together."

Didak had a shot from the pocket with seconds remaining but missed, handing Williamstown a memorable 15.13 (103) to 14.13 (97) win.

Collingwood rookie Caolan Mooney was also superb, finishing with five goals.

For Williamstown, former Melbourne rookie Leigh Williams was solid with four goals, while Western Bulldog Tom Campbell took several contested marks.

Sandringham pulled off a huge upset against Northern Blues yesterday, coming back from a six-goal deficit to win 20.10 (130) to 18.9 (117) at Trevor Barker Oval.

St Kilda-listed Tom Ledger (31 disposals) and Farren Ray (26) led the way for the Zebras.
