Worsfold untroubled about future

FORMER Essendon forward Matthew Lloyd has called on West Coast to part ways with coach John Worsfold if they don't win the AFL premiership this season.

But Worsfold says even if he does win a second flag as coach, it doesn't mean he'll definitely continue on into a 12th season at the helm.

The Eagles have drifted in premiership favouritism following their 0-2 start to the year, with a series of injuries to key players leaving them vulnerable to the competition's better sides.

Lloyd said West Coast's depth simply wasn't good enough, and predicted the team would struggle to replace veterans Darren Glass, Dean Cox and Daniel Kerr once they retired.

"Now, they should be threatening for a premiership," Lloyd told Channel 9 this week.

"I think if they don't win the flag this year... maybe it's time for West Coast and John Worsfold to part ways.

"Maybe with Kerr and Naitanui missing so much footy, they can't do it. I just feel their depth isn't good enough to respond."

Lloyd's comments come as a surprise given Worsfold's success at West Coast and the way he was able to transform the club into a premiership contender so soon after their wooden spoon campaign of 2010.

In 11 full seasons in charge, Worsfold has guided West Coast to eight finals series, two grand finals and the 2006 premiership.

In 2011, West Coast reached a preliminary final, while they battled manfully to finish fifth last year despite a horror injury run.

Worsfold, who also captained the Eagles to two flags, is in the final year of his deal, and has put negotiations on hold until the end of the season.

But even if results do fall West Coast's way this year, the 44-year-old said he would have to weigh up family circumstances and his own coaching desire before deciding whether he wants to continue.

"Matthew Lloyd's job is to comment on footy issues," Worsfold said today.

"If we get beaten in the grand final by one point, would he really think that? I don't know.

"I will concern myself with that in October.

"After we win the flag, I'll still weigh it up with the club, because maybe winning another premiership might be the right time to change.

"So we'll wait and see."

Worsfold said Kevin Sheedy's 27-year stint at Essendon proved that coaches could enjoy extended success at the one club.

The Eagles will start as hot favourites in Saturday's clash with struggling Melbourne at the MCG, with West Coast set to be boosted by the return of forward Mark LeCras.

LeCras broke his right arm less than three weeks ago, but has trained strongly over the past week and is adamant he's ready to play.

However, Kerr might have to spend another week in the WAFL after missing the entire pre-season following knee surgery.
