PORT Adelaide's membership has already cracked the AFL club's longstanding wish to be at 35,000 - and Power president David Koch is setting a new, ambitious target of 40,000 this season.

Koch also has drawn an incentive from his club's new joint major sponsor, Renault, with a car to be raffled among the membership base if the Power meets this 40,000 target.

Port's membership tally reached 35,130 last night, with the club reporting a spike in sales last week on the back of the 79-point win against Melbourne in the season-opener at the MCG on Easter Sunday. Port has generally not reached the 35,000 figure until mid-season.

The new hope delivered at Alberton in the summer - coupled with the Power fans' need to be members this season to get access to prime seats at the new Adelaide Oval next year - has led to the most significant spike in Port membership sales since the pioneer years in 1997-98.

Koch has dubbed his membership dream as "Drive to 40,000".

"Port Adelaide people have been fantastic in embracing the new era at their club," Koch said last night as the Power opened its home stand against Greater Western Sydney at AAMI Stadium.

"But we have got a lot of work to do - and we are determined - to get to 40,000 for the first time in our history. When we do we are going to reward one lucky member (with a Renault Megane). If we don't get to 40,000 members, we won't be giving away the car."

Port's membership was officially listed by the AFL as 35,543 last season. The record number in the AFL count is 38,305 from the club's second season in the AFL, 1998.

The target date for reaching the 40,000 target is June 29 when the Power will host Victorian powerhouse Collingwood.

"I have no doubt we can get there if we all pull together," said Koch. "Members are the heart and soul of the Port Adelaide Football Club."
