Hannebery leads way for Swans

Sydney claim the first overseas AFL win, beating the Saints in Wellington.

John Longmire says Swans are fortunate to be a part of first overseas match.

A TYPICALLY gutsy performance from midfielder Dan Hannebery has helped get the Swans back on the winners list with a 16 point victory over St Kilda and earn him the Anzac Medal.

On a day where Australia and New Zealand celebrated Anzac Day together it was a suitably courageous effort from Hannebery who had to overcome injury to play.

"He was doubtful to play, he copped a huge cork on his calf last week,'' coach John Longmire said.

"I never really saw him without ice on his calf all this week.''

Hannebery's grit and toughness was witnessed by 22,546 who turned up at Westpac Stadium in Wellington for the first ever game for points on foreign soil.

There wasn't much wind in the city know for it's strong breezes but the slippery surface at Westpac Stadium ensured a hard fought contest rather than a showpiece event.

While the match wasn't spectacular, Swans coach John Longmire was thrilled with the experience and the occasion.

"The city is fantastic we really enjoyed the time we've spent here,'' Longmire said.

"We focussed on our footy and that was the most important thing to win the footy but we've also been able to enjoy the whole experience of the first game for points outside Australia."

The ANZAC medal winner and his team mates also understood the significance of the occasion.

"I'd be happy to come back here all the boys had a sensational experience,'' Hannebery said.

"The crowd was very vocal and it was clear there were plenty of New Zealanders out there.'

'It wasn't the pretty spectacle the AFL would have been hoping for but there were plenty of acts of physical courage as both teams threw their bodies into every contest.

"It was one of those games where there was plenty of body contact and you had to concentrate all the time because you never knew when the ball would come to you in the slippery conditions,'' Hannebery said.

Hannebery had plenty of mates in the Swans midfield who stood up in the difficult conditions.

Luke Parker was outstanding as he handled the greasy conditions brilliantly and picked up 25 possessions and booted two goals.

The Swans regular hard men Josh Kennedy, Kieren Jack, Ryan O'Keefe and Jarrad McVeigh also were solid contributors.

The midfield ascendancy wasn't being converted as well as it could be and the Swans waisted their chance to seal the match in the third quarter allowing the Saints to keep hopes of victory alive when they trailed by 25 points at the last change.

When Leigh Montagna kicked his second goal the gap was just 10 points with seven minutes to go but free kick to Swans ruckman Shane Mumford settled the match in the dying minutes.

While the Swans held sway around the packs defender Ted Richards had his hands full with Saints skipper Nick Riewoldt who picked up a staggering 19 first half possessions along with 8 marks and two goals.

Riewoldt battled on but had few big contributors outside Lenny Hayes and Leigh Montagna.

One Saint who grabbed plenty of attention though was Ahmed Saad who's two deliberated shots for goal provided a bizzare sideshow.

With a run up for his kick West Indies fast bowler Michael Holding would have been proud of Saad managed to drain what felt like an eternity off the clock only to miss both shots.

Lewis Jetta started on the substitutes bench and responded to the threat to his spot in the team with seven possessions in the final term.

The slippery conditions also did little to help Sam Reid find form as he gathered just 8 disposals and failed to bother the scorer.
