Don't leave it all to Dangerfield

ADELAIDE midfield coach Scott Camporeale has warned the Crows are in strife if too much is left to star midfielder Patrick Dangerfield and those around him don't begin to pick up the paddles.

Camporeale, a Carlton club champion and premiership player, likened the club's situation to a few years ago, when too much fell to reigning best and fairest Scott Thompson, but was confident the midfield group was not far away from finding its top gear.

Unflinching in his appraisal, Camporeale underlined some home truths - last year is gone and this midfield group has not achieved anything.

The midfielders around Dangerfield have to find form, and fast.

Adelaide's situation has changed, because in Sanderson's first season they came from a long way back and played unfettered by expectation. Now they are known players and need to adjust to that change in perception.

"Absolutely, any team that's playing in the finals, whether you come under the radar or not, the opposition spend a bit more time scouting you," Camporeale said. "They're doing a fair bit more (time) on what you're doing well and what your weaknesses are.

"That's no different from what I would do on opposition teams. At the moment, our group has to be in a bit better form - there's no doubt about that.

"That was our strength last year, of the group - the output was consistently at the level. We're continually working. We're certainly not the complete package but the thing about our group is that they want to learn and hopefully they will.

"We can't just rely on one person to win games of footy and I think we saw that at this footy club when Scott Thompson was our best midfielder.

"As a midfield group, we need an even contribution.

"Everybody can talk about Dangerfield and yeah, he's a very good player, but nobody seems to single out how well (Rory) Sloane is going or how well (Richard) Douglas is playing or the importance of introducing (Brad) Crouch through the midfield.

"That's fine - everybody can talk about Dangerfield and look, he's an exciting player and a damaging player. But I think we're kidding ourselves if we think, as a footy club or us as a midfield, 'If Dangerfield plays well we're going to win games of footy'."
