PORT Adelaide appears to have hit the jackpot with three off-season recruits.

While the Power lost a thrilling NAB Cup clash against Melbourne by two points at Renmark Oval yesterday, draft pick Ollie Wines showed why the Power invested its prized first-round selection on him.

A physical beast for a teenager, the 18-year-old had 10 of Port's 21 clearances and a game-high 15 contested possessions to underline his potential.Another teenager, Sam Colquhoun - taken by the Power in the pre-season draft from Central District - shone as a running half-back, having 19 disposals and showing he is an elite kick.

While he's still a lightweight at 72kg, he is not afraid to win the hard ball (he had eight contested possessions), and looms as a player of the future once he adds a few kilograms to his light frame.

The other recruit who had recruiting manager Geoff Parker smiling was Sandover Medallist Kane Mitchell.

The rookie-list pick-up from Claremont continued his stellar pre-season form to win more disposals (26) than any other player on the ground.

The long-haired running machine is the clear frontrunner to earn promotion to Port's senior list if the club opts to elevate a player for long-term injured forward Nick Salter (foot). The trio - and ace midfielder Hamish Hartlett - were the standouts for a young Power side that came storming home but ultimately fell two points short of beating the Demons to drop out of NAB Cup grand final contention.

Port - missing a host of key players, including captain Travis Boak, vice-captain Brad Ebert, Kane Cornes, Jay Schulz, Robbie Gray and Angus Monfries - came from 25 points behind in the final term to nearly snatch victory.

It kicked the last three goals of the game, including a supergoal to the superb Hartlett, to come within four points with five minutes to play.Jarrad Redden - impressive in the ruck - had the chance to win the game for the Power with a set shot from 30m.

However his kick missed to the left, while Mitchell's hurried snap with two minutes left just scraped through for a behind.

Former Crow James Sellar was the star for Melbourne with five goals while stand-in skipper Aaron Davey booted three.Port lacked a strong focal point without Schulz and the injured John Butcher.
