Sam says: Newman has been released up the ground and will be an excellent point of difference, Boyd's ineffectiveness has always hurt him in SuperCoach – even when the Dogs were a finals side – and Cox is a monty with Nic Nat injured. Varcoe has never been an accumulator and this won't change down back, but Karnezis is screaming "pick me!" having been rejuvenated on a wing.

Matt says: Jobe Watson might not be everyone's first choice, but he's a possible captain candidate for mine. Ultra consistent and can score through the roof - last year's numbers are too good to ignore. Bryce Gibbs is a valuable tip for the defence given his dual-position status, Dean Cox is a lock every year and Brent Macaffer might well be the year's most popular pick up. My tip? Take a punt on a few mid-ranged players who you think might make a big jump up in price this season.

Al says: Started with a bunch of mid-pricers in my squad but as NAB Cup has progressed it's looking more like guns and rookies. The forward line might be the exception with a severe lack of bargain basement players who will actually get game time. Of the mid-range options there, Pat Karnezis is the clear standout. In the middle I'm looking for some value in cheaper premiums (like Mundy) who have a much bigger upside than Jobe, Selwood and Co.

Sam says: Take the Grant Thomas approach. Rucks are overrated. I'm happy taking one premium and three rookies into Round 1 and splashing cash around elsewhere. Grab a superstar like Dean Cox and throw Dan Currie a guernsey and beef-up that midfield. Thommo was onto something.
