Sad end to Talia's soaring season

AS memorable as Season 2012 is for Daniel Talia with his AFL Rising Star status, it did not end with pleasant memories from his first final series.

The Adelaide centre half-back broke an arm as he pushed off Sydney forward Mitch Morton in the third term of the qualifying final at AAMI Stadium - a match from which Talia offers a tough critique of his performance.

But the story of Talia holding hope of playing in last year's grand final - had Adelaide reached the premiership play-off - just three weeks after breaking his arm is indeed true.

"(Coach) Brenton Sanderson came up to me and said there was a chance with surgery that I could be back in three weeks," recalled Talia.

"I was the one pushing to at least train that week (of the grand final) and have a crack at playing.

"Whether I would have got through the first training session, I will never know," said Talia, whose team-mates came within a goal of denying Hawthorn in the preliminary final at the MCG.

"I wanted to give myself the best chance so I kept working at training, but it was always going to be a bit of a stretch."

The cast is off Talia's arm but the sour memories of the final series is not off his mind.

"Last year's finals, for me personally, were very disappointing," said Talia, who considers all the ceremony that came with his Rising Star award in the first week of the finals as a drain.

"I was probably a bit flat going into that weekend because I had done so much stuff, travelling to Melbourne and missing the main training session. It was not the perfect preparation - and the first half I did not play very well. I didn't get a lot of the ball.

"As I felt I was getting into the game in second half, I broke my arm.

"I clashed with Mitch Morton.

"We were running to a quick kick forward - and we were both in the goalsquare. I went to push off him and he lifted his knee up to run.

"His knee hit the outside of my arm.

"I kept playing, but I knew straight away it was broken.

"Obviously the ball was in the area so I couldn't just stop and let him kick a goal.

"I got the ball to the boundary line but I knew the whole time that my arm was broken. It wasn't a good thought running to that line."
