PORT Adelaide is the first AFL club to react to the drug crisis in Australian sport by declaring a minimal-tolerance policy at Alberton.

The Power will urge the AFL to change its illicit-drug policy with:

PLAYERS allowed one strike a season and three in a career. The AFL has a three-strike policy with a strike removed from a player's record after three years.

CLUB chief executives to be told on a player's first strike rather than the third.

CLUB chief executives and medical officers to get a report on all drug test results from their team but without players being named.

CLUBS to have the right to target test with greater vigour than the AFL. Currently they can only ask the AFL to target test their players.

HAIR TESTING, particularly during the end-of-season period in September-October.

The tough stand at Alberton is endorsed by Port's president David Koch, chief executive Keith Thomas and new coach Ken Hinkley.

"We are about setting a standard - about quarantining our club from drug use," Thomas told The Advertiser last night.

"We are unequivocal on the issue of illicit and performance-enhancing drugs - there is absolutely no room for either at the Port Adelaide Football Club."

The Power last night issued a statement to its members by email declaring:

PORT is not caught in the Australian Crime Commission report that declares performance-enhancing drugs are being used in the AFL.

This dramatic revelation has so far caught Essendon amid allegations of systematic use of illegal substances last season.

"There is no suggestion that Port Adelaide is implicated in any way, other than recruiting two players from Essendon (Angus Monfries and Henry Slattery) this year," said Thomas.

"(They) may be interviewed as part of the investigation. Both players are co-operating fully."

PORT has banned the use of injections and intravenous drips.

"Unless medically directed, we have a strict no injection-no IV policy," Thomas said.

PORT is clean with its use of supplements.

"We abide by the codes provided by the Australian Institute of Sport for all supplement use," said Thomas. "We only use products provided by approved and recognised brands.

"Players must inform our medical staff of any unapproved supplement or substance before taking it." They are educated to understand that if they fail to do this, it is their responsibility."

FOOTBALL operation chief Peter Rohde is the club's first integrity officer.

He will report direct to the Power board on integrity issues.

"His responsibilities," said Thomas, "will extend both our AFL and SANFL (Magpies) football structures to ensure that standards we are applying as a club in the areas of salary cap management, illicit and performance-enhancing drug policies, protocols for using supplements and detecting corruption are relevant and adhered to."

Rohde already has been charged with reviewing Port's current policies.

He has also been asked to find ways to strengthen the Power's protection against drugs and match-fixing corruption immediately.

"We want to adopt best practice in these areas and are aggressively getting on the front foot," said Thomas.

"We want to develop industry-leading education, policies and procedures to ensure the club protects itself and its players and staff from the damage any association with these activities can cause.

"We have seen the damage that can be caused to the reputations of clubs and individuals when these issues arise - and the cultural damage if these negative influences are allowed to enter your club.

"We will fight to ensure this does not happen to Port Adelaide.

"But if it does, we must be in a position to deal with it quickly and decisively."
