PORT Adelaide is making no apologies for not trying to win the NAB Cup.

The Power - which is in Cup reckoning with a 1-1 record and a good percentage - has left five of its best eight players out of tomorrow's very winnable clash against Melbourne at Renmark.

It is the round one clash, also against the Demons, at the MCG, that is the Power's main focus.

Captain Travis Boak, vice-captain Brad Ebert, club champion Kane Cornes, No. 1 forward Jay Schulz and full back Alipate Carlile have all been given the weekend off.

Brett Ebert, Justin Westhoff and Jasper Pittard also have been rested as the club carefully manages its pre-season preparation while ace recruit Angus Monfries, former captain Dom Cassisi and exciting forwards Robbie Gray and John Butcher are injured.

"It's not about winning the NAB Cup for us," Port coaching and strategy director Alan Richardson said of tomorrow's squad.

"It's all about getting our team prepared as best as we can for the start of the (premiership) season.

"We are managing their workload and game time and want most of our senior players to play between two-and-a-half to three games.

"That being the case and given we've got only a six-day break before our next game (against West Coast in Alice Springs) we have to be mindful of who plays and who doesn't.

"It just turns out that quite a few of our senior players will be missing this game."

Power coach Ken Hinkley already has expressed his dissatisfaction at his club having to travel so far in the space of a week.

The Port players will travel three hours by bus to Renmark today before returning home after tomorrow night's game.

They will then fly to Alice Springs on Friday for Saturday night's clash against West Coast.

"It's a pretty difficult one and it certainly doesn't sit well with me that we have to do all that, but that's part of the competition and there's sides travelling everywhere," Hinkley said.

"If you asked me for an ideal world we'd play seven-day breaks and we'd play them all in Adelaide."
