PORT Adelaide's senior players believe the Power can stun the football world by emulating West Coast's stunning rise from wooden spooner to top four in 2011.
Port has emerged from two testing seasons under Matthew Primus optimistic the rebuilding phase does not have to take years to complete, and pointed to West Coast as the prime example.
The Eagles, Port's opponents in Alice Springs tonight, rose from a wooden spoon in 2010 to make the top four.
That the Power faces West Coast tonight - in a game threatened by thunderstorms - provides Port an opportunity to measure itself against an elite club. The Eagles are expected to play close to a full-strength side.
"There's no reason a team can't turn it around, whether it be in 12 months, 18 months, two years," forward Jay Schulz said.
"There's no real recipe for how teams turn it around but teams have shown in the past that they can turn it around from being down the bottom to playing in the finals.
"We just really want to fine-tune our team, getting blokes settled into their positions for round one.
"And it's a perfect opportunity for us against West Coast.
"I'm pretty sure they're going to have their main side on the park this week so it's a real opportunity for us to have a good hit-out against them and see if we can take it up to what we think is going to be a top-four side again this year.
"We want to be up there winning games and playing finals."
The Power is keen to see how John Butcher and Jay Schulz work together in the forward line tonight, with the latter having struck form in training after returning from injury.
It will not only take pressure off Schulz, but also make the side's attack a less predictable one.
"Johnny's spent a lot of the pre-season on the sidelines," Schulz said.
"But he comes back into training a few weeks ago and lights up the track.
"You sort of forget how talented the kid really is. He's going to be fantastic for the future of this club."
