STOMACH ulcers have emerged as a widespread but little talked-about issue in professional football as players' increasingly rely on anti-inflammatory drugs to deal with injuries.

Crows midfielder-forward Jason Porplyzia has been startled by the number of players who have relayed stories of stomach ulcers as he awaits the results from his health scare after Adelaide's final practice match last weekend.

porplyzia, 28, was admitted to hospital after having stomach pains in the rooms after the Crows' practice match against Carlton.

It is believed the ulcer was caused by the use of anti-inflammatory drugs, which he has taken regularly as he has battled with shoulder injuries.

But he learnt quickly he was not alone when the phone started ringing during his recuperation.

"I've been hearing of stories over the past week of things having happened to guys," Porplyzia said.

"I guess inevitably when you're taking these sort of things something's going to crop up at some stage.

"It was nice to hear that I wasn't the only one who had experienced it.

Respected doctor John Orchard, an associate professor at the University of Sydney and a co-author of the AFL's annual injury report, said taking anti-inflammatories brought side effects that were considered a "trade-off" for a player to recover quickly.

He said the risks were well known and the administration of such drugs were monitored closely by club doctors, but he said the effects of long-term use could force club doctors and players to look for pain relief in alternative drugs.

Leading Australian sports doctor Peter Larkins said it was common for footballers who took anti-inflammatories as part of their treatment to have stomach complaints, even though Porplyzia's was at the high end of the scale.

There were cases when players had to stop taking the drugs because of adverse reactions.

But Larkins said those cases would not stop anti-inflammatories being part of professional sport.

"In the sporting world, they're very, very commonly used," Larkins said.

"And the risks are commonly recognised.

"People who are sensitive to them can't take them at all, if there's too much acid response.

"The younger athletes tend to be less vulnerable to it, but the problem with the younger person is that they're often going to play sport and take them at a younger age.

"Different individuals are more prone to it.

"But I haven't heard of too many players who have ended up in hospital.

"But if you're taking it for lengthy period of time, it builds up."

Porplyzia kept it low-key when he spoke about his pre-season ailment.

But he was confident he would play in round one against Essendon next week, provided he could get through training.

"It was a bit worrying at the time, but obviously I was in good hands with the doctors at the football club," Porplyzia said.

"I guess if you're going to have a scare like that, it was nice to have it at the football club because I knew I was in good hands and taken care of.

"I don't want to go into too much detail, but ... yeah, I didn't feel too good after the game and things escalated from there.

"But I'm fine now and have bounced back well."

It is yet to be confirmed what caused the ulcer.

But Porplyzia said the most likely scenario outlaid to him was that anti-inflammatories were the main culprit.

"I think that might be a possible reason but we're still actually not too sure," he said.

"We're still waiting on results.

"But I feel fine.

"At this stage I'm looking to play (in round one)."
