JASON Akermanis says he feels no great joy at being vindicated for his outspoken comments on AFL players using performance enhancing drugs.
An Australian Crime Commission report released on Thursday has uncovered a major doping scandal in Australian sport, with the finger pointed at the throats of Australian football and rugby league.
Akermanis was roundly criticised in 2007 for saying an opposing player was using performance enhancing drugs.
The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority later investigated the claims but found no basis to Akermanis' argument.
Five-and-a-half years later Akermanis' words have come echoing back through the corridors of AFL and NRL officialdom after the ACC report was made public.
"I could say I'm rapt the chooks have come home to roost and that sort of stuff,'' Akermanis told the Herald Sun yesterday.
"But to tell the truth I don't feel any better now than I did then about the great game of Australian Rules and what's happening to it.
"I sensed something was wrong six years ago and tried to do something about it and look what happened when I spoke up.
"It's still happening and the authorities will never eradicate it, there's too much money and other forces involved.
"All elite sportsmen want to get bigger, better and quicker and unfortunately some of them go to other means to make it happen.
"The bottom line is I know what I saw and I'll stand by it for as long as I'm here, it's taken a few years to be proved but here it is.
"I'm not going to name names, though I know everyone out there will want me to,'' Akermanis said.
"The thing is players know what they can do and what they can't do, in this case some have run the gauntlet to the nth degree.
"But they have to know the world will find out about it some day.''
