BRISBANE'S forward planning has been tipped upside down by another bout of knee surgery for luckless Lion Brent Staker.

Staker, who was being groomed for a return to the forward line beside club co-captain Jonathan Brown, will miss the pre-season NAB Cup and at least the side's AFL Round 1 appointment with the Western Bulldogs.

He had surgery yesterday to remove damaged cartilage from his left knee and will be sidelined for up to eight weeks, meaning the premiership would be about three round old before he could hope to play a game in the reserves.

The injury, suffered in training, is another serious blow to the former West Coast Eagle but the bright note is that the operation was on his left knee, not the right one which has been reconstructed twice in the past two years.

Staker sat out the entire 2012 season after complications from his LARS surgery in 2011.

It was a setback Lions coach Michael Voss could have done without.

Onballer Simon Black will miss the start of the NAB Cup while a handful of Lions, headed by ruckman Matthew Leuenberger, are easing back into action after injury interrupted seasons last year.

Staker, who is comfortable in almost any position on the ground, was set to start the season in the forward line.
