FORMER Hawthorn president Jeff Kennett has repeated his call for the immediate ban of all sports betting advertising in Australia.
Kennett said yesterday the AFL's love affair with gambling revenues had opened the door to organised crime and corruption.
"I am sick to death of the way we are encouraging a whole generation of young people that gambling is acceptable," Kennett said.
"The stuff that goes up on scoreboards, the stuff that gets mentioned by radio stations about the odds, all of that goes."
Kennett said this week's revelations about drugs and match-fixing had put AFL chief executive Andrew Demetriou and league chairman Mike Fitzpatrick on notice.
"The AFL cannot fiddle any longer while the code is burning and being held up to ransom," he said.
"If the AFL commissioners and Andrew Demetriou now don't understand that what they have been doing in the past is actually encouraging people to cheat, then they ought to get out of the job.
"The buck stops with them now. The whole attitude of the AFL is wrong."
Kennett said regardless of the outcome of the probe into Essendon, the scandal was a wake-up call.
"Every club by Friday night - president and CEO - should have called in their senior officers, reviewed their processes and used the allegations that have been made against Essendon," he said.
sThe former Victorian premier is also demanding the scrapping of footy's three-strike illicit drugs policy in favour of a tougher regime.
"If a player tests positive, he should be suspended for one year ... and have his pay reduced to the pay of a rookie recruit.
"He then receives rehab for a year. If he offends for a second time, he is expelled from the code all together. Forever."
