Cats have nothing to hide

GEELONG says it has "nothing to hide" about the training program it ran under former fitness guru Dean Robinson.

Robinson, who was the strength and conditioning coach at the Cats between 2007-2010, has been stood down by Essendon, where he worked last season, while the AFL and ASADA investigate allegations of inappropriate use of supplements.

"We have nothing to hide and there has been no wrongdoing on our part," Cats chief executive Brian Cook said yesterday.

Cook's comments came as a club source told the Geelong Advertiser that Cats players were subjected to intense scrutiny from drug testers after they started their amazing winning streak in 2007, which ultimately led to their drought-breaking premiership.

"This team was suddenly winning everything and I guess ASADA thought, 'What's going on here?'," the source said.

"ASADA had drug testers there all the time, but there was certainly nothing sinister behind what we were doing.

"Do the simple things well was the philosophy and it was very, very simple what we were doing. There was no rocket science behind it."

While the AFL yesterday refused to reveal whether Geelong would come under investigation,  Cook reaffirmed the club's doors would be open if the league chose to do so.

"The club is fully committed to assisting the AFL and ASADA in this investigation," he said.

"The club's doctors, and not any sport science staff, directly determine all treatments and the use of all supplements by players."

Robinson moved to Essendon for the 2012 season on the recommendation of Geelong premiership coach Mark Thompson, who had arrived a year earlier to work as senior assistant to James Hird.

While at Windy Hill, Robinson worked with sports scientist Stephen Dank, who left the club last season.

It has been alleged that Essendon players were asked to sign waivers, supposedly exonerating the club of wrongdoing in the taking of the mystery supplements.

Cook said nothing of the sort had ever taken place at Geelong.

"No player has ever been requested to sign a waiver or indemnity concerning supplements used," he said.

Geelong premiership captain Cameron Ling said he was surprised to see Robinson's name linked to the Essendon investigation.

"Dean's a lovely guy, I got along really well with him," Ling told 3AW yesterday.

"He was part of our strength and conditioning group during that time (2007-2010) and (I was) very surprised to hear that anything wrong would have gone on, because certainly nothing like that ever happened while I knew him and while he had his time at Geelong.

"I can only talk from experience from my time as a player. That just didn't happen, it was not the culture at all.

"Always after the games we would have the protein shakes and I think the most disgusting thing we ever had was beetroot juice. Terrible tasting stuff.

"All of that is pretty common through most sporting organisations."
