COLLINGWOOD youngster Marley Williams will do a pre-season with the Salvation Army as punishment for an assault charge in Western Australia.

The Magpies announced today Williams will work with the Salvos for the next 10 weeks for his role in a late-night scuffle in his home town of Albany on December 27.

The 19-year-old defender will face a committal hearing in Albany next week.

Collingwood football director Geoff Walsh said while the club backed Williams in the court case he had agreed to volunteer for the Salvation Army "to atone for putting himself in the position to be drawn into a regrettable incident".

The punishment was decided with input from Williams, senior players, coaches and staff.

"While we remain very supportive of Marley, the fact is he was out late, drinking, and put himself in a high risk scenario," Walsh said.

"We believe Marley has already learnt from the incident and now recognises that he had the opportunity to make a better decision. He is certainly remorseful.

"Hopefully, the next 10 weeks will impress upon him the need to uphold the values and standards of the Collingwood Football Club."

Williams is not the only young player to get in trouble back home over summer.

Gold Coast midfielder Harley Bennell was charged after a New Year's Eve fight at Mandurah, south of Perth. The 20-year-old did not appear in court yesterday to answer the charges, with his lawyer winning an adjournment until April 2.

In a turbulent summer off the field for the AFL, West Coast youngster Murray Newman faces serious assault charges after an incident at a Perth nightclub.

And earlier this week, Hawthorn recruit Brian Lake was asked by teammates to find ways to help victims of the Tasmanian bushfires after he was arrested for public drunkenness last weekend.

Williams joined Collingwood as a rookie in 2012. He played six matches and was promoted to the senior list at the season's end.
