SOUTH Australian coach Brenton Phillips has predicted Tuesday morning's draft will be the icing on a great year for the state, with as many as six young players finding their way into the AFL system via the pre-season and rookie drafts.
SA had 15 players snapped up in the national draft, can claim Jack Viney and Josh Simpson because they played in the local system and will be able to claim an 18th player to make a list through Sam Colquhoun.
The two local clubs, Adelaide and Port Adelaide, will be bit-part players in the rookie draft that falls on the same day (December 11) as the pre-season draft, with one and two selections respectively.
But it is expected the talent from the SA state team and the SANFL will continue to cash in even if it is with clubs from across the border.
Phillips, a Magarey Medallist and a former Essendon and Brisbane player, was confident the rookie draft would cap off a fine year.
"You never know what the clubs are going to do other than it sounds like Port is committed to Sam Colquhoun, which is a bonus," Phillips said.
"And it sounds like Melbourne or Hawthorn is going to commit to Jack Hannath (of Central District) and there's a couple of others who will probably be rookie-listed as well.
"So in terms of numbers we'll probably have another six players listed by the end of Tuesday."
Phillips said clubs would continue to aim for the best talent, but predicted they would continue to take where players were from into account.
"If it happens to be a local kid that they can take . . . I think Adelaide has done it fairly well over the last couple of years. You only have to look at Matty Wright come through.
"It's served them really well."
Port has committed to Colquhoun for its pick in the pre-season draft but has a range of players to choose from when the rookie list comes around. The Power has eight unlisted players still training with them - Liam Jurrah, Colquhoun, Norwood's Jaryd Cachia and the Port Magpies' Sam Gray, Kory Beard, Justin Hoskin, Aseri Raikiwasa and Sean Lemmens.
The club, through football department chief Peter Rohde and chief recruiter Geoff Parker, said there was interest in all of above players - but have also said they were looking elsewhere before they made their decisions on rookies.
