CARLTON will send all but one player on its maiden Arizona altitude camp.
Only new father Eddie Betts will miss the two-week stay in Flagstaff, in which the Blues will come face-to-face with Mick Malthouse's game plan for the first time.
Carlton officially starts training with an open session on Monday afternoon - Malthouse's first day in charge - before 44 players and 11 staff fly to the US on Friday.
Football manager Andrew McKay said the Arizona camp would be as much educational as physical. He said players on modified programs would still make the trip to come to grips with Malthouse's philosophies.
"We're going to be walking through the game style and game plan that Mick wants to implement so it's good for everyone to be there," McKay said.
"We've blocked out almost every second or third day to have meetings in the afternoon to go through those elements. The boys will get a pretty good education.
"In the four days before we fly out they'll be a bit of that, but certainly over there there's going to be the opportunity to sit down as a group."
The Blues have booked seven sessions at North Arizona University's Skydome for running sessions, which will be followed by weights and cross-training in the afternoon.
The group will climb nearby Humphreys Peak twice, while there will also be a visit to the Grand Canyon, about two hours away.
"It will be constant without being too high intensity. It will only be the boys' second week back so we don't want to train them too hard, but in saying that they'll feel it, that's for sure," McKay said.
"We wanted to experience something different and just get the boys together so they can get to know Mick outside this environment and Mick can get to know the guys outside this environment."
Carlton is expected to decide within a fortnight whether it will add a sixth assistant coach, who would most likely fulfil development and senior team duties.
The Blues were keen on Andrew McLeod, but the Adelaide legend recently rejected the offer because he didn't want to relocate his family.
