KARMICHAEL Hunt yesterday declared he has never had thoughts of returning to rugby league and intends on playing out his contract with the Gold Coast Suns.
Hunt, who is in Arizona on an altitude training camp with the Suns, re-signed with the Gold Coast for another two years midway through last season after establishing himself as a legitimate AFL player.
The blowtorch immediately turned on Hunt following Israel Folau's shock exit from Greater Western Sydney to return to the NRL.
Hunt, who learnt of the defection at a team breakfast, believes Folau made the right decision because his heart wasn't in it, but declared he had no such feelings.
"I would never think I would pull out like that, but I'm different," Hunt said.
"I wouldn't have signed on for another two years if I didn't want to play AFL.
"I've never had thoughts about going back to NRL and I always said from the start if I didn't think I could make it or if I didn't feel my heart was in it I never would have crossed over."
The former State Of Origin star said he wanted to take his game to another level.
"It's still very early days in my transition, but I feel like I'm heading in the right direction and I enjoy playing AFL and I love playing for the Suns," Hunt said.
While Folau's attitude was often questioned, Hunt has been a revelation at Metricon Stadium.
He has led the Suns in many of their training drills and has never had his attitude put under the microscope.
Hunt achieved a career highlight when he kicked the winning goal after the siren last season against Richmond in Cairns.
While AFL has been a good move for Hunt, he said he understood why Folau did not want to stay in the sport.
"Obviously he felt his heart wasn't in it and I guess it would have been unfair to a lot of people, including himself, if he carried on," Hunt said.
"It's a pretty brave decision on his behalf and I respect his decision."
The pair played together for two years at the Broncos, but Hunt admitted they were not close friends.
"We played for two years together with the Broncos and we have a good relationship when we cross paths, but not close relationship."
While not totally surprised Hunt conceded the news did catch him off guard.
