COLLINGWOOD has changed its leadership model, but skipper Nick Maxwell looks safe in the job despite a push for heir apparent Scott Pendlebury.
Though all Magpies will be closely watched and challenged over summer under the guidance of Leading Teams, coach Nathan Buckley is not expecting radical change.
"Maxy is a very strong leader and I would suggest he will still be the one," Buckley said on the Gold Coast this week.
But the move back to Ray McLean's Leading Teams, who parted from the Pies under Mick Malthouse in 2002, is a significant shift for a coach more willing to shake things up in his second year in charge.
"I'm a big believer in a player empowerment model and players holding themselves to account and I think that is the most sustainable way to build and maintain a strong culture," Buckley said.
"We have a very strong and resilient playing group that has a lot of experience, knows what sucess looks like and feels like, but it is important to remember that is always a work in progress.
"Bringing Ray (McLean) in we are not turning things upside down, but like a new weights program or skills program or coaching strategy, you hope for another two or three per cent.
"If you get a few of those along the way that makes a big difference."
The Magpies, who head to Utah for an indoor altitude camp on December 4, will finalise key leadership positions in February-March.
While the top tier of leadership looks settled, Buckley is intent on fast-tracking the next wave.
"We lost a lot of experience at the end of 2010 - now we need to build that next tier of leaders again and the opportunities are there," he said. "Like a player, you have to learn it, be taught it and invest time and energy to it."
There will be a shift in focus on-field.
"It's more than evident that, though we got to the top four, Hawthorn were clearly the better side throughout the home-and-away and Sydney were the best side in the last six weeks, and they played off," Buckley said.
"We still feel with our best footy and the list we have got, the nucleus is good enough to go up those next couple of rungs again.
"We have recruited on a needs basis; we think (Quinten) Lynch is going to have a massive influence on our ability to look after Darren (Jolly) and give Trav (Cloke) an extra marking forward inside-50, and Cinton Young gives us that extra outside run.
"Jordan Russell has good penetration, is an excellent disposer of the footy and a great runner. They are all ready-made. So even before the draft we we were advanced on the short term.
"We have had a very successful football program over four or five years. We have been top-four consistently over the last three or four and we want to maintain the position because you can contend from there.
"Then you have to find that extra couple of per cent, the X-factor to get over the line."
